Investigators believe alcohol and speed were factors in a crash Wednesday afternoon that left one person dead and two others with severe injuries.

The crash happened at around 4:50 p.m. in the 25200 block of East 56th Avenue, according to Aurora Police.

Investigators say the driver of a vehicle speeding down westbound East 56th Avenue lost control and went into the eastbound lanes, hitting another vehicle head-on.

The collision was so severe that it ripped the front end off of the westbound vehicle.

The person driving the eastbound vehicle died at the scene, according to Aurora Police. That person’s identity has not yet been released.

The driver and the passenger in the westbound car – which was determined to be at fault --- were taken to the hospital with severe but non-life threatening injuries.

The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation.
