Commerce City Police respond to a crash that killed five people and injured three at U.S. 85 and East 112th Avenue on Friday night.

ADAMS COUNTY, Colo — Four people were killed in a crash Friday night on U.S. 85 near the town of Henderson, according to the Commerce City Police Department (CCPD).

The department originally said five people were killed in the crash, but said Monday evening that one of those victims survived and is being treated for serious injuries.

Editor's Note: Based on information provided by the Commerce City Police Department, this story previously reported an incorrect number of people killed in the crash. The department provided corrected information Monday that revised the death toll to four.

The crash happened about 9:25 p.m. at U.S. 85 and East 112th Avenue. Four people were pronounced dead at the scene, and four other people were injured and taken to a nearby hospital.

Police said all four people who were taken to the hospital suffered serious injuries. The names of the four people who died have not yet been released.

Several of those involved in the crash were Standley Lake High School students, according to Jeffco Public Schools.

According to CCPD, a witness told police that a newer model SUV was driving south on U.S. 85 at a high rate of speed from East 120th Avenue. Another newer model SUV turned west on 112th from northbound U.S. 85, causing the two cars to collide at the intersection, police said.

Police and investigators said they think excessive speed was a contributing factor in the crash.

The southbound lanes of the highway were closed between 120th Avenue and Longs Peak Drive on Friday night, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT).

This was the second deadly crash in Commerce City in 2022.

The full statement from Jeffco Public Schools is below:

It is with heavy hearts that we share that several Standley Lake High School students were involved in a tragic car accident over the weekend. We do not have permission to share the names or the medical conditions of specific students as we continue to get updated information from law enforcement in real time. What we do know is that this tragedy will be felt across Standley Lake High School and will likely impact staff and students in other Jeffco schools who know the students involved. A Jeffco Public Schools crisis team will be on site to support Standley Lake High School students and staff members and work to reach other impacted students and schools as needed as they process these very difficult circumstances. This is a tragedy felt across Jeffco. Our thoughts are with these students’ families and friends.
