KUSA — A busy stretch of Interstate 70 in Denver was closed for nearly 7 hours on Sunday morning after a three-car wreck that killed one person and injured eight others.

The crash happened around midnight on I-70 near Holly Street in Denver's Northeast Park Hill neighborhood.

According to a spokesperson for the Denver Police Department, a black sedan was headed west on I-70 and changed lanes, striking a red SUV. The red SUV lost control, hit the center median and ended up in the eastbound lanes of the highway. That red SUV then struck a white sedan that was traveling east on I-70.

The driver of the red SUV was killed, according to DPD. The driver of the black sedan that seemingly caused the wreck was uninjured. The driver of the white sedan was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Between the three cars, there were eight other people inside, not including the drivers. All eight were all transported to the hospital with injuries, but those injuries do not appear to be serious.

An investigation is ongoing, according to DPD, and no charges have been filed at this time.

I-70 fully reopened just before 7:30 a.m.
