Westbound I-70 reopens in Glenwood Canyon

Both directions of the interstate were closed between Dotsero and Glenwood Springs after a semi overturned on the highway.

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. — Westbound Interstate 70 has reopened in Glenwood Canyon after being closed for much of the day due to a semi-truck crash Monday morning.

Just after 10 p.m., the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) said the westbound lanes of the interstate had reopened through the canyon.

The eastbound I-70 lanes remained closed between exit 114 at West Glenwood Springs and exit 133 at Dotsero, but CDOT expected them to open by 11:30 p.m.

The crash happened west of Hanging Lake Tunnel.  Photos tweeted by CDOT showed a semi-truck on its side in the westbound lanes in Glenwood Canyon. The truck partially crashed through the guardrail, with the cab blocking the eastbound lanes. No one was injured in the crash.

Other crashes also took place nearby as vehicles tried to avoid the crashed semi-truck, CDOT said.

CDOT suggested two alternate routes for Glenwood Canyon, both of which added several hours of travel time.

Also Monday, the westbound lanes of I-70 were closed between Loveland Pass and Silverthorne for several hours due to a crash just west of the Eisenhower Tunnel. Those lanes reopened just before 8:30 p.m., CDOT said.
