Passenger in fatal I-225 crash involving an Uber identified

The 52-year-old passenger in the backseat of the Uber, Charles Leake, was killed.

DENVER — The Colorado State Patrol (CSP) is looking for a driver who fled from the scene of a fatal crash involving an Uber early Monday on Interstate 225.

The two-vehicle crash happened about 3 a.m. on I-225 southbound, just north of South Yosemite Street, according to CSP.

An Uber spokesperson confirmed the crash happened during an in-app Uber trip. A passenger in the Uber, identified as 52-year-old Charles Leake, was killed.

The southbound lanes of I-225 were closed for the investigation, with traffic being diverted off at Parker Road. The roadway fully reopened just before 7 a.m.

An hour earlier, a vehicle that was rolled onto its hood laid in the middle of the interstate, near the Regional Transportation District (RTD) Dayton lightrail station.

CSP said the driver of a Jeep Cherokee caused the crash. The Jeep hit a Toyota Corolla and then rolled. The Jeep's driver got out of the vehicle and left the scene.

The Toyota Corolla had an Uber sticker on it, CSP said. The driver was transported to a hospital with minor injuries.

Speed and alcohol are being investigated as factors in the crash, according to CSP.

A possible suspect has been identified, but no arrests have been made, CSP said.

Uber released the following statement regarding the incident:

"Our hearts are with everyone impacted by this horribly tragic incident. We stand ready to support the law enforcement investigation and hope the person responsible will come forward and be identified by police."
