Rockslide temporarily closes I-70 in Colorado mountains

A rockslide temporarily resulted in the closure of Interstate 70 near Vail on Wednesday morning.

VAIL, Colo. — A rock slide closed lanes of Interstate 70 Wednesday morning in western Colorado.

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) had to close lanes of both westbound and eastbound I-70 after 8 a.m. Wednesday because of rocks on the road.

Lane closures were in place between Exit 171 Minturn and Exit 173 West Vail for about 90 minutes until the rocks were cleared around 9:30 a.m.

Another rock slide cause traffic issues Tuesday in La Plata County as a large boulder caused damage to County Road 213 near River Road.

Snow is expected in Colorado's mountains Wednesday and Thursday.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from Rabbit Ears Pass through Vail, Aspen, Snowmass and into Telluride. These areas will see up to a foot of new snow along with 50 mph gusts.

Winter Storm Warnings are in effect for the Elkhead and Park Mountains, the Grand and Battlement Mesas and the Flat Tops. Those areas could see 10 to 20 inches of snow along with blustery winds.

There's also a Winter Storm Warning in effect for the West Elk, Sawatch mountains and San Juans will see up to 2 feet of new snow. These winter travel alerts start tonight and continue through all of Thursday.
