Bridge work to cause lane closures on Denver street for more than a year

Denver's Department of Transportation and Infrastructure said the preventive maintenance will begin in late March.

DENVER — Drivers can expect delays on a stretch of Speer Boulevard for more than a year while crews perform bridge maintenance work.

Denver's Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) said in a release Thursday that starting in late March and lasting through spring 2024, there will be lane closures for bridge improvements on Speer between Interstate 25 and Wewatta Street.

The work will alternate between northbound and southbound lanes, with two of the four lanes open at all times.

DOTI said crews will start their work on the bridges over the South Platte River and Little Raven Street, first with the northbound spans and then the southbound spans.

Crews will then move to the bridge over the railroad tracks following the same northbound-then-southbound sequence.

Work will be happening underneath the bridges and on the bridge decks, with the arches over the Platte River and Little Raven Street getting a fresh coat of paint.

DOTI promises the preventive maintenance will ensure the bridges "provide a smooth, safe ride and effectively support the traveling public for years to come."

Message boards will be in place to alert drivers, and sidewalk closures will route pedestrians to the side of the street opposite the work or to the Cherry Creek Trail.
