DENVER — With Thanksgiving just days away, Denver International Airport would normally be pretty busy, but thanks to a major winter storm, not many flights got off the ground early Tuesday morning.

However, around 9 a.m. airport officials said that four of six runways had opened up. They expected to get back to normal operations by late Tuesday morning or early afternoon.

Flight delays and cancellations as of 5:30 p.m. Tuesday:

TUESDAY

  • 697 delays
  • 490 cancellations

WEDNESDAY

  • 3 delays
  • 6 cancellations

On average, the airport said in a tweet, it has about 1,600 flight operations per day.

Of course, with all those cancellations, things looked a little different than they normally would at the airport. There were almost no cars at the passenger drop off area on the west side of the terminal.

Airlines are also offering travel waivers in an effort to get ahead of what could be nearly impossible travel conditions.

Here's who's offering what: 

United: On Twitter, the airline said it has issued a travel waiver for Denver due to anticipated winter weather. If you’re traveling Nov. 26, you can change your flight at no cost on United's mobile app or calling reservations at 1-800-864-8331. Waiver: uafly.co/N3y8Ni t.co/kqowNR09Nd

Delta: On Twitter, the airline said it has issued a weather waiver due to forecasted weather in Denver on Nov. 26. More information: bit.ly/33iqIsa 

Jetblue: According to its website, the airline said due to anticipated snow and winter weather in the Denver area, it will waive change or cancel fees and fare differences for customers traveling Monday, Nov. 25, through Tuesday, Nov. 26, to and from Denver.

Customers may rebook flights for travel through Friday, Nov. 29 online in the Manage Flights section of jetblue.com or by calling 1-800-538-2583 prior to the departure time of their originally scheduled flight. Customers with canceled flights may also opt for a refund to the original form of payment. Original travel must have been booked on or before Sunday, Nov. 24, 2019.

Frontier: The airline's media relations said in preparation for the winter storm, Frontier has enacted a travel advisory that allows for customers traveling through Denver or Colorado Springs to make one itinerary change. Southwest: The airline on its website said that based on the forecasted weather conditions for DIA, scheduled service on Monday, Nov. 25 through Tuesday, Nov. 26, might be disrupted (flights may be delayed, diverted and/or canceled).

Customers who purchased through Southwest.com or its mobile app are eligible to reschedule their travel plans online or from their mobile device.

Customers who did not purchase a ticket via Southwest.com can call 1-800-435-9792 to speak with a customer representative.

Customers in the U.S. scheduled to travel internationally must call 1-800-435-9792 to speak with a customer representative for assistance with rebooking.

American: According to its website, anyone using the airline to travel to, through or from Denver may change their trip with no change fee if they bought their ticket by Nov. 24, are scheduled to travel Nov. 26, can travel Nov. 24-29, don't change their origin or destination city and rebook in the same cabin or pay the difference.
