Denver airport set an all-time passenger traffic record in 2022

Passenger traffic soared at Denver's airport in 2022, surpassing pre-COVID numbers.

DENVER — More travelers passed through Denver International Airport in 2022 than any year in the airport's 27-year history.

Denver International Airport (DIA) had 69,286,461 passengers in 2022, breaking the previous record of 69,015,703 in 2019.

In 2022, the airport saw a traffic increase of 0.4% over 2019 and 17.8% more than in 2021.

October 2022 was the busiest month ever at DIA, the airport announced.

Last year was also the busiest year for international passenger traffic at Denver's airport, with volume reaching more than 3.3 million, 4.6% more than 2019.

For the year, 58.8% of DIA's passengers began or ended their trip in Denver.

United led all carriers in passenger traffic at DIA with 46%. Last year was the busiest year ever at DIA for both United and Southwest.

DIA's largest carriers in 2022

  • United (46%)
  • Southwest (31%)
  • Frontier (10%)
  • Delta (5%)
  • American (4%)

DIA said that its ranking among airports around the globe will be determined later this spring when full statistics are released.

"It’s no surprise that 2022 was the busiest-ever year on record for [DIA]," DIA CEO Phil Washington said.

"The airport benefited from resilient passenger and cargo demand. Additionally, ongoing investment by our airline partners provided the capacity to achieve this new record. We look forward to future growth in 2023 and beyond as we work toward achieving Vision 100 – 100 million passengers."

"Our airport’s recovery in 2022 to pre-pandemic levels of passenger traffic is nothing short of extraordinary, but it exemplifies the importance of [DIA] as a national and international hub for air service," Denver Mayor Michael Hancock said. "As the largest economic engine in the state, [DIA] continues to lead Denver and Colorado to new heights."
