DIA strike ends with 'historic' raises for janitors

Janitors at DIA can expect to see a $4 an hour raise over their 3-year contracts, said SEIU.

DENVER — Janitors at Denver International Airport (DIA) have reached a historic agreement with Flagship Facility Services, for a $4.00 an hour raise over their three-year contacts.

This comes after 350 janitors walked off the job at 6 a.m on Saturday due to increased workloads said the Service Employee International Union (SEIU) Local 105, a Colorado union that represents healthcare, janitorial, security and airport workers.

SEIU said that the 350 janitors were negotiating for months with their contractor, Flagship Facility Services, about their three-year contract.

In a press release, SEIU said they plan to strike against Flagship's unfair labor practice and lack of a fair compromise on wages and workload. SEIU said that Flagship's wage proposal is lower than inflation.

“We’re on strike for fair wages and workloads,” said Luis Gonzalez, a member of SEIU. “We keep this place running, we put ourselves at risk every day, and we deserve to be able to put food on the table for the holidays. This isn’t easy for any of us, but neither is working a second job just to pay the bills. We’d love to be able to spend Thanksgiving with our families, but we’re doing this to make our jobs better, our communities better, and this airport better for everyone who has to travel through here for the holidays.”

SEIU is expected to strike against the unfair labor practices today at the airport from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m.

SEIU is the same group that has taken action in the past. On September 30, the group walked off the job due to similar issues.
