Timing, temperature, why hasn't Denver gotten any snow?

Bad luck with storm track, temperature, and timing has left Denver with a snowless fall.

DENVER — A few bands of light snow left a dusting on the eastern plains Friday morning. Just 25 miles away from Denver International Airport. That's how close Denver got to breaking the snowless streak which now stands at 206 days.

The last time there was snow accumulation in Denver was April 21.

And with no possibility for snow in the forecast until Wednesday, it will likely be one of the top five, if not the longest, wait for Denver's first snow. The record's latest date is November 21.

The meteorology just has not been in our favor this fall.

The biggest problem has been storm location. While the storm pattern has been plenty active, most of the storms this fall have been well to the northeast of Colorado.

That brings us mostly northwest winds, which limit the moisture over the Front Range. Winds from the east usually bring us the best chance at the snow.

Relatively warm temperatures have been another big issue.

For instance, there was some snow in Denver on November 1. It probably would have accumulated on the ground if that day's low temperature was just average, which is 31 degrees.

But the low was 33 degrees, and it was 35 degrees when it started snowing.

It would have helped a little if the snow came first thing in the morning, but we've also had bad luck with timing.

With the storm on October 15, the low temperature was 30 degrees, plenty cold enough for snow accumulation.

But the snow came in the warmest part of the day when the temperatures were slightly above freezing. There was accumulation in Douglas County, but just rain in Denver.

Another storm system is coming next week, but it will likely be another northern storm track, so Denver will have to get lucky with timing and temperature to get the first snow of the season.
