Snow causes school closures, late starts Wednesday

Snow and ice-packed roads have caused several Colorado school districts to close or delay opening Wednesday.

COLORADO, USA — More than two dozen schools, businesses and offices in Colorado are on delayed start or closed Wednesday due to snow and windy conditions, especially south of the Palmer Divide.

Clear Creek School District RE-1, Cripple Creek Schools, Evergreen Academy, Platte Canyon District 1, and Jeffco's mountain schools are among those closed for the day on Wednesday.

Academy District 20, Lewis-Palmer District 38, Elbert School District 200, Falcon School District 49, Manitou Springs School District 14, Widefield School District 3, Harrison School District 2, and Colorado Springs School District 11 are among those opening late on Wednesday.

Air Force Academy, Peterson Space Force Base, and Teller County Government are also on delayed start Wednesday.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for as far north as the Medicine Bow Range to as far south as the Sangre de Cristo mountains.

One to three feet of snow is possible for those regions which includes, but isn't limited to Rocky Mountain National Park, the Northern and Southern Front Range Foothills, the Wet Mountains, and Sawatch Mountains above 9,000 feet.

A Winter Weather Advisory is also in place for the Elkhead and Park Mountains. Areas above 9,000 feet will receive 8-14 inches. The San Juans will see 6 to 12 inches of new snow.

The Palmer Divide will experience the heaviest precipitation which is great news because that has been a particularly dry spot since the start of meteorological spring. This will certainly put a solid dent into the drought that we have been experiencing.

With an increase in elevation and a couple of degrees cooler, the rain/snow line will be just south of the Denver metro area with this April storm. Snow will be likely in areas above 6,500 feet in Jefferson, Douglas and Elbert counties.
