With near record-breaking heat expected the first week of June, here's a friendly reminder not to leave pets in the car.

It takes just a few minutes for temperatures to rise to dangerous levels.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Foundation, with outside temperatures in the 90s, the temperatures inside the car can rise as much at 20 degrees in just 10 minutes.

After an hour, that car could reach temperatures near 140 degrees.

What do you do if see a dog in a hot car?

The law changed last year in Colorado. It is legal to break into a car to save a dog or cat if there is reasonable belief the pet might die, but you have to follow the rules. The person breaking the car's window would have to make an effort to find the car's owner, call police, and then stick around waiting for officers once the window has been broken.

Even outside the car can be dangerous for pets if they're in the heat too long. Our furry friends are subject to dehydration and heat stroke. Keep water handy & take breaks in the shade!
