Denver sees unusual 80-degree late October day

There have only been eight 80-degree days in late October in Denver.

DENVER — The temperature in Denver hit 82 degrees at about 4:30 Monday afternoon. That was recorded at the official climate station at Denver International Airport.

That marked the 48th time in October that the Mile High City has hit 80 degrees over the past 10 years. There's nothing too unusual about that, but most of those days were early in the month.

Counting Monday's high, only eight of those 80s happened after Oct. 20, and the average final 80-degree day in Denver is Oct. 11.

The angle of the sun really starts to lower by the middle of October, so it takes an unusual weather event to allow Denver to reach 80 degrees.

In this case, a record-setting storm system that’s been battering the West Coast is helping high pressure swell to the east, in Colorado. You can see the clouds and the cold going around a dome of high pressure on satellite.

Monday may have been Denver's last chance to reach 80 degrees until the spring.

Denver has only reached 80 degrees three times in November since 1948. It’s never hit 80 in December or January.

And in February, it’s happened just once. Feb. 10, 2017 is the only winter 80-degree day ever recorded in Denver.
