Will Denver have a White Thanksgiving?

As people across the country get ready to travel for the holiday, some may be wondering, will Denver have a white Thanksgiving?

COLORADO, USA — It seems like we started winter off early in 2019.

The official snow count at DIA was 12.5 inches for the month of October. Since then, most of November has been mild, with just a couple of cold days in between.

So what about Thanksgiving? Will it be warm or white? Here's a look at some of the statistics.

The rules for having a white Thanksgiving are the same as a white Christmas. You have to have one inch or more of snow on the ground, or a tenth of an inch of snow falling that day.

According to data from the National Centers for Environmental Information, statistically across the country, the chances of having a white Thanksgiving get higher the further north you go.

In Colorado, we’ve had a white Thanksgiving up to 40% of the time along and east of Interstate 25. To the west, over the mountains, it goes up to 80%. The city of Denver has had a white Thanksgiving 27% of the time.

We had the most snow on the ground in 1979. That Thanksgiving, the snow depth measured 14 inches. The average is just under an inch.

The most snow fell in 1928. Snowfall measured 8 1/2 inches that day. The average snowfall for Thanksgiving is 3/10 of an inch.

The last time Denver had a white Thanksgiving Day was four years ago. On Nov. 26, 2015, 1 inch of snow was reported on the ground.

Keep in mind, these are just statistics.

There’s a little less than two weeks to go until Thanksgiving. So we’ll have to wait another week before we can give you an actual forecast.
