Officials say a man killed in an avalanche in southwestern Colorado was participating in an advanced avalanche safety class at the time.

The Colorado Avalanche Information Center said Monday that a group of six backcountry skiers from the Silverton Avalanche School triggered Saturday's avalanche near Red Mountain Pass, which caused another avalanche. According to the center's preliminary report, 40-year-old Peter Marshall of Longmont was buried in at least 8 feet (2.5 meters of snow) from both slides.

In a Facebook post, the school expressed its deepest condolences and said this was the school's first avalanche death since its founding in 1962.
