DENVER — The downtown Denver Greyhound bus station is officially on the market.
"We’ve been in contact with Greyhound for the last 15 years about this site," said John Desmond, the Executive Vice President for Downtown Environment for the Downtown Denver Partnership.
Desmond has been with the Downtown Denver Partnership for almost 20 years. And during almost all of that time, he said the partnership has kept tabs on the 2.45 acres that make up the downtown Denver Greyhound bus station.
"This site has a lot of opportunity for a number of reasons," Desmond said. "It hasn’t seen development in the last 20 or 30 years."
The bus station on 19th Street was built in the '70s. But the Downtown Denver Partnership and a number of other local and national interests have had their eye on the football-field-sized facility for over a decade. Now that it's been officially placed on the market, the brokerage firm Jones Lang Lasalle (JLL) is responsible for the sale of the 100,000-square-foot facility.
According to JLL, the bus station isn't listed on the market for any set price. They say, as interested developers come forward, their bids will determine what the sale ultimately looks like.
Desmond is eager to see what ideas developers come up with.
"It would take a very creative redesign to reuse parts of it," Desmond said.
He said he's not convinced a renovation would be enough to make the building functional, but he has a lot of hope for what developers might do with the plot of land it's on.
"What’s most important is, how does this benefit the whole surrounding neighborhood and all of downtown and the city of Denver by what’s developed here?" Desmond said.
Leading up to the sale, Greyhound considered moving its operations to Union Station or using space near Broncos Stadium at Mile High. JLL is working with the company on the relocation process.
For now, Greyhound will operate from the bus station on 19th street until it finds its new, official spot. That is expected to happen by the end of 2020.
