Holly tornado extremely unusual

PROWERS COUNTY - Climatologists say a lethal tornado like the one that swept through Holly Wednesday is exceptionally rare in Colorado.

The last time a tornado killed someone in the state was on June 27, 1960 in Sedgwick County.

However, Wednesday's fatality is not the only factor that makes this recent tornado so unusual.

Colorado's tornado season really begins in late spring and peaks in June making a tornado in March very extraordinary.

Also, it's uncommon for a tornado to touch down on a town like Holly.

Colorado State University climatologist Nolan Doesken says it last happened back in 1990 in Limon.

To make things worse, Holly just got through a crippling few months.

"They've already been through one of the most horrendous winters in the history of Southeast Colorado and only recently melted off the snow," said Doesken.
