DENVER – Police are searching for a man who crashed his vehicle into a woman on a scooter on Saturday and then fled the scene on foot.

Denver Police say the crash occurred at 10:15 p.m. at Colfax and Grant. They say a man was driving a dark colored Chevrolet Tracker westbound on Colfax and attempted to make a left turn in front of the woman on the scooter, who was heading eastbound.

That's when the man hit the woman, throwing her from the scooter. She was taken to Denver Health Medical Center with serious injuries. Her name and condition were not immediately released.

The driver of the Tracker continued driving for about a block, dragging the woman's scooter underneath his vehicle, according to police. After pulling over, witnesses say the man grabbed his keys and some other items from inside the vehicle, tried to stuff some evidence down a storm drain and then left the scene.

When police arrived, they found the scooter underneath the Tracker. They say they are looking for the registered owner of the vehicle. According to police, the numerous witnesses will be helpful in the case.

"It's not like this person is going to be able to claim that they didn't know that they hit somebody," said Det. Tilo Voitel of the Denver Police Department.

Voitel says the suspect would be better off turning himself in to police, because he feels they will be able to apprehend him soon.

"It'd be a whole lot better coming in and dealing with this right away rather than letting us catch up with him," said Voitel, "because it truly is only a matter of time."
