Ill-fated jump into crowd at Copper Mountain may net criminal charges for skier

One witness told the Summit Daily they saw the skier talking about jumping into the crowd while brandishing a bloody mary in one hand. A woman's collarbone was broken in the jump.
Hugh Carey / hcarey@summitdaily.com Hayden Wright, 26, broke a woman's collarbone after flying into the crowd at Copper Mountain Resort's annual pond skim event on Saturday. Authorities now plan to charge him with felony assault.

An unorthodox ski jump at Copper Mountain may mean criminal charges for one skier after he flipped into the crowd during the pond skimming event there and hurt several people this past Saturday.

A photographer with the Summit Daily captured the exact moment 26-year-old Hayden Wright launched himself into the unsuspecting crowd. When Wright landed on the people below him, he broke a woman's collarbone and left several others with minor injuries.

Ski patrollers rushed in to help those who were hit by Wright.

Just before the ill-fated jump, a witness told the Summit Daily newspaper he heard Wright talking about jumping the crowd while holding a bloody mary.

"I just hit the deck," Logan told the newspaper as Wright jumped into the crowd. "When I got up everyone was all shaken. There were three to four people on the ground hurt. It was like a car wreck. Everyone was shocked."

Because of the grievous nature of the injuries he caused, Wright may be facing felony assault charges. Summit County Sheriff Jaime FitzSimons says he is still hoping to hear from more witnesses about what happened last weekend.
