Man talks about being laid off by Dish Network

Dish laid off nearly 500 people in Colorado.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Englewood-based Dish Network is laying off nearly 500 people in Colorado, and Matt Larson is one of them.

“I was a security analyst,” Larson said.

He worked at the headquarters in Englewood for almost two years.

“I had to box up all my stuff and head out the day they announced it to us,” Larson said.

Larson was told the layoff was not performance-based.

“We had a hack earlier in the year in February,” Larson said. “Our Q3 earnings came out this week, we weren't in the best spot there.”

Dish Network reported $3.7 billion in revenue for the third quarter of 2023, compared to $4.1 billion the same quarter last year.

“I think it was just a mix of a bunch of series of bad events,” Larson said.

Larson said he wasn't surprised by the layoff.

“There's rarely a case in this industry where there aren't repercussions for those types of things happening,” Larson said.

Larson said he's still getting paid through the end of the year.

“There's a little bit of a cushion for us to, you know, get back on our feet and find some new opportunities,” Larson said.

New opportunities, with the help of old coworkers.

“We went out the day after we were let go with a group of our coworkers and there were people making phone calls to people that they knew were in a position to hire,” Larson said.

Larson is staying optimistic about what's to come.

“Staying positive for as long as we can,” Larson said. “I have nothing but happy thoughts for Dish, they’ve been great to me and it's unfortunate where they're currently at and someday they'll hopefully turn it around. Offers for resume reviews, mock interviews, basically anything anyone could do to help. They’ve been there and shown up it’s been huge.”

According to a statement from a Dish Network spokesperson, the company is making the move because of changing business demands.

The company employs 14,000 people across the U.S.
