Tech Tuesday: 2017 Will Be An Immersive Year

TaRhonda Thomas sat down with 9NEWS technology expert Scott Yates to talk about how virtual reality will start to change business in 2017.

KUSA - TaRhonda Thomas sat down with 9NEWS technology expert Scott Yates to talk about how virtual reality will start to change business in 2017.

Right now, virtual reality and augmented reality is small niche in the technology world, but it could really turn into a business tool in the coming year. While current applications are mostly related to games and entertainment, one new company is at the cutting edge of what a business application could be.

Walkthrough, based in Denver, creates videos of homes for sale that can be viewed in a virtual reality headset. Rather than just putting up pictures of a home, real estate agents can create a totally immersive tour of a home. Interested buyers can really look all around, up and down, and take in the dimensions of a home – all from a headset powered by a mobile phone.

That's just one of what could be an explosion of new business applications that use virtual reality.

If that happens, metro Denver could be at the forefront of the trend because of the leadership of a great company from Boulder, Occipital. This is the company that invented the Red Laser app that lets users scan any bar code. The company sold that app to Ebay, and since then it has grown into an industry leader in 3D sensing.

They just released a new product called "Bridge" that allows users to plug in an iPhone and use augmented reality applications that sense and track all the objects and walls in a room, but then can add layers of generated images on top of tables or other items in that room.

Startup Holiday Party

The last big event of the startup year is a "mashup" holiday party hosted by a half-dozen different tech meetup groups. It will be a great chance to network and learn about what's coming for 2017.

It's free, and will be held tomorrow, Wednesday, December 21 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Commons on Champa, 1245 Champa St, Denver, Colorado 80204.

Each Tech Tuesday Scott Yates showcases new and emerging companies that are doing great things in Colorado, along with tech events. This post was written by one of the freelance writers working with the blog writing service BlogMutt. Do you want to see your business featured in a future #TechTuesday segment? Build an interesting business and then go to a startup event, and Scott will probably see you there.
