Denver Health’s Acute Center for Eating Disorders has doubled its number of beds — an expansion that leaders say is a reaction to an increase in the number of patients needing its services.
The 10-year-old center that began with two inpatient beds now is home to 30 around-the-clock beds designed to treat men and women who have the most severe cases of eating disorders.
That includes patients from around the world, some of whom are flown in on air ambulances of partner Angel Med Flight if commercial transportation to the Mile High City is not an option.
Dr. Philip Mehler said the growth came as center leaders found that the number of patients who were close to death by the time they arrived at the Acute Center was increasing.
