DENVER BUSINESS JOURNAL — More information has come to light in the wake of Southwest Airlines' Flight 1380.

The Chicago Business Journal this week obtained a copy of an email dated Feb. 26 from Bret Oestreich, the national director of the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA), to Southwest Airlines COO Mike van de Ven.

The letter was sent less than two months before the April 17 incident on Southwest Flight 1380 in which an engine on a Southwest Boeing 737-700 aircraft exploded in mid-flight en route from New York City to Dallas.

A passenger who was partially sucked out of a broken window caused by the explosion subsequently died. It was the first fatal incident on a Southwest plane in the company’s nearly 50-year history.

A Southwest spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the letter or its contents.
