Suspect in Edgewater standoff charged with 34 counts

EDGEWATER, Colo. — A man who police said exchanged gunfire with officers during a 17-hour standoff in Edgewater has been charged with 34 counts related to the incident on Fenton Street earlier this month, according to the First Judicial District.

John Alfonso Cruz, Jr., 40, is charged with the following:

  • 12 counts of attempted first-degree murder
  • Four counts of attempted first-degree assault
  • Eight counts of menacing
  • Arson
  • Three counts of illegally discharging a firearm
  • Two counts of possession of a deadly weapon
  • Failure to leave premises upon request of Peace Officer
  • Two violent crime counts

Cruz appeared in Friday where he was advised of those charges.

Edgewater Police on July 12 were called to the 2500 block of Fenton Street at 7:30 a.m. for a report that someone was discharging a weapon.

According to the arrest affidavit, police identified that shots were coming from a home there. Police attempted to contact John Cruz, Jr., who was inside the house, but were unsuccessful.

They were able to evacuate John Cruz, Sr. and his wife from the home and learned that their son was inside and had several weapons.

SWAT was called in and over the next 17 hours, repeated attempts were made to contact Mr. Cruz, Jr., ordering him to come out of the house, according to police.

Shots were exchanged during the standoff. Around 12:30 a.m. on July 13, Cruz was finally arrested. There were no injuries to anyone involved.

Cruz is being held at the Jefferson County jail on $500,000 bond. His preliminary hearing has been set for Aug. 15.
