FORT COLLINS — Colorado State guard Prentiss Nixon announced that he will transfer from the Rams basketball program on Friday.
The junior tweeted out a statement expressing his appreciation for his time in Fort Collins, but after consulting with his family and former basketball coaches, he has decided to pursue other opportunities for his senior year.
Nixon was the leading scorer for a struggling CSU team last season, starting in 25 of 27 games and averaging 13.1 points per game. He missed five games due to injuries.
During the month-long conduct investigation into former head coach Larry Eustachy, Nixon was one of the few players who openly supported Eustachy. Even after Eustachy and the university mutually agreed to part ways, Nixon seemed committed to the Rams. He attended the formal introduction of Colorado State's new head coach Niko Medved, who helped in recruiting Nixon out of high school while he was an assistant coach at CSU.
The Illinois native has one year of eligibility remaining but will likely have to sit out next year under NCAA transfer rules unless he is approved for a hardship waiver.
Nixon is the second player from last years' squad to leave the program. Guard Kris Martin announced last week that he was transferring to Oklahoma.
Forward Nico Carvacho was granted a release to talk with other schools but has not yet announced if he will stay with CSU or leave for another university.
