Denver's Museum of Contemporary Art is helping visitors be more mindful

"We wanted to bring intentionality and mindfulness to your visit," the museum's director of programming said.

DENVER — It seems so simple, yet for a lot of people, living in the moment can be pretty hard.

That's why Museum of Contemporary Art Denver has come up with a way to help its visitors be more mindful. For the next several months, museum staff will host Self Care Sundays which they hope will help give visitors an even more meaningful experience.

"It's interesting because it does make you notice a little bit more," said Sarah Kate Baie, the museum's director of programming. "That's really the basis for this. We want people to just smell the air, to listen to the sounds that they hear and to see and notice things that they might not have noticed before.

Baie said each month there will be four new prompts for visitors to follow as they check out the different exhibits. They can include everything from experiencing candy with all five senses to sketching some of the art by memory.

"We wanted to bring intentionality and mindfulness to your visit," Baie said.

The new program was described as a subtle form of intervention. In fact, it's so subtle, not everyone will even notice the different prompts or they might mistake them for exhibits themselves.

However, the ones who have followed the mindfulness suggestions said it impacted their experience at the museum.

"I feel like setting an intention with anything that you do in life helps you be a lot more mindful and just helps you stay a lot more present," said museum-goer Angelica Segura. "My intention for today is kind of just to stay present because I feel a lot of times when we're in scenarios like this, we tend to whip our phones and try to capture everything for our story or our feed or just social media in general."

Baie said Self Care Sundays will continue through April.

Admission for anyone 18 and under is free.
