New weight loss medication facts for women

We ask Dr. Ozzie Grenardo | PAID CONTENT

DENVER — Q.  Dr. Grenardo, weight loss gets harder and harder for women as we age, is there a reason why?

A.   There are a lot of factors...metabolism slows down as we age, which means we’re not able to burn as many calories as we could before.  Also, hormonal changes and any kinds of medications you may be taking...they have a big impact.  Don’t forget as you lose lean muscle mass that plays a role in how many calories you’re able to burn throughout the day.

Q. What about medications like Ozempic...what should we do first before asking for a prescription?

A.  It’s really getting with your primary care doctor, someone you trust, to discuss what is really happening to prevent your weight loss...the medications you’re on, your hormone levels...can those be changed...from a medical perspective above and beyond just diet and exercise to determine how your weight goes and what you can do for it.

Q.  There are compounded medications out there that claim to be as effective, what should we know about those?

A.  Ozempic is a fantastic medication for a lot of people...and the FDA put it on a short list because people who really needed the medication, those with diabetes, weren’t able to get it.

With those compounded medications...make sure...where you’re getting them from, with a prescription, are cleared and you’re comfortable with your provider.
