'Dream On 3' helps Broomfield boy live out lifelong dream after brain surgery

“This is about the best dream ever,” Patrick McCoy said as he reflected on the huge surprise.

DENVER — A 12-year-old from Broomfield lived out his dreams sitting courtside for warm-ups before the Denver Nuggets game Wednesday night, before attending NBA All-Star weekend in Indianapolis.

While Patrick McCoy was playing basketball two years ago, he had a seizure on the court. An MRI later revealed a brain tumor the size of a ping-pong ball. He later traveled to Boston to have brain surgery.

Dream On 3, a nonprofit making sports-themed dreams come true for kids living with life-altering conditions, helped this young basketball player and fan live out his dream.

Anticipation grew outside of Nativity: Faith and Reason school in Broomfield on Wednesday, as family and friends got ready to pull off a big surprise for McCoy.

“This is about the best dream ever,” McCoy said. “Just got picked up out of school and saw the limo over here and everybody, my uncle over here, my grandma, my grandpa. It's just been an awesome day so far.”

He knew he'd go to the 2024 All-Star weekend after a long recovery from brain surgery, but he had no idea about Wednesday’s surprise, which can be seen below:

Dream On 3 gifted McCoy a pair of Nike shoes with his name painted on them.

“Oh my gosh,” McCoy said. “That is the coolest thing ever. I’ll put them on right now.”

The McCoy family was sent off in style as VIPs for the Denver Nuggets game Wednesday night. Patrick was back on the court, this time as a fan sitting courtside, to watch his favorite team.

“This is better than Netflix,” said Patrick’s brother, Will McCoy.

Will said his big brother is awesome and deserves this.

“He's always anxious to be the one that can like, help someone that like, needs like the help,” Will said.

On a scale of 1-10, this surprise was off the charts - "10, 11,” the boys agreed.

Wednesday was a night they say they will remember forever.

“My entire life,” Patrick said.

“A million and million years to come,” Will added.
