Landmark Denver restaurant is shutting down

It will be replaced by a contemporary French restaurant
Where the Wazee Supper Club sits today, along 15th and Wynkoop, used to be a dark and rickety old viaduct. The landmark restaurant has occupied this corner building since 1974.

Denver’s constantly changing downtown restaurant scene is about to undergo another upheaval, as Wazee Supper Club will close its doors in late January after 43 years and be replaced by a contemporary French restaurant.

A staple of Lower Downtown since 1974, the restaurant was opened by Angelo and Jim Karagas, who also launched the still-operating My Brothers Bar. Roadhouse Hospitality Group — operators of 15 other restaurants throughout the Front Range and the mountain areas — bought it in 2015, planning to revamp the Italian-themed menu.

However, that effort came shortly after the opening of Denver Union Station and its variety of restaurants and bars, and the Wazee makeover got lost a bit in that excitement, said Dan Shipp, Roadhouse co-owner.

He and restaurant group executives looked at turning the space into one of their burger-and-beer-themed Roadhouse concepts but then decided the space called for more of a destination restaurant. They instead found a buyer that could bring a unique concept and liven up the building.
