Denver prepares to light up downtown for holidays

Denver has lit its City Hall since 1922. The current City and County Building was constructed in 1932.

DENVER — The holiday season is kicking off in downtown Denver.

A ceremony will be held Wednesday evening to activate the annual light display at the Denver City and County Building.

The Light the Lights event will happen Wednesday from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Bannock Street at the City and County Building.

Leaders from the Denver Sheriff Department, Denver Fire Department, and Denver Police Department will activate the light and music display at approximately 5:15 p.m.

Wednesday's ceremony will feature two police vehicles, a Tesla, a lowrider, firetruck, and sheriff K9 unit and Camaro vehicles.

The Denver City and County Building’s eight-minute, choreographed lights and music show will play every Tuesday through Sunday at 5:45 p.m. and 6:45 p.m., with a static light display between the two shows and until 10:45 p.m.

Christmas lights were first hung outside Denver's City Hall in 1922. The current Denver City and County Building was first decorated after it opened in 1932.

"We invite our community to come celebrate Denver’s long-honored holiday tradition, Light the Lights," said Katy Strascina, Executive Director of City and County of Denver’s Office of Special Events. "It’s a magical experience to see the transformation of our Civic Center Plaza into a winter wonderland, filled with the joy and spirit of the holidays."

Civic Center Park is also playing host to the Christkindlmarket through Dec 23 and Mile High Tree through Dec 31.
