Centura Health CEO Gary Campbell, who has been one of the Denver-area leaders attempting to move health care away from hospitals and toward less acute settings over the past 10 years, will step down from his role overseeing Colorado’s largest health-care system on Sept. 1.

Arapahoe County-based Centura operates 17 hospitals in Colorado and western Kansas, including Porter Adventist Hospital in Denver, St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood and Littleton Adventist Hospital.

Campbell, who took over day-to-day operations of the system in July 2008, will take on a new executive position focusing on leadership development and health-value optimization, Centura said.

President and COO Peter Banko, who came to the system in April 2016 from one of its parent organizations, Catholic Health Initiatives, will become president and CEO when Campbell steps away.
