DENVER — Here are some of the biggest business headlines of the last week, from the Denver Business Journal (DBJ).
Residential real estate
Lakewood voters approved Initiative 200 in a special election Tuesday, a measure designed to limit growth and development in Colorado's fifth-largest city. Proponents had argued the measure was necessary to maintain property values and keep rents in check. Opponents say just the opposite will happen.
Prior to the sale of the five-bedroom, five-bathroom home at 950 S. Steele St., no residential property had passed the $4 million mark in the Belcaro area, according to information from REColorado. This sale broke the neighborhood's previous sale record by more than $1.78 million — a purchase made by Janet Elway, ex-wife of John Elway, in 2008.
The main home is described in the listing as a "castle-like estate" and "an architectural wonder, clad in copper, steel, glass, and stone" capped off with a dramatic $1 million bridge. The residence boasts seven en suites and features that make the home feel like a resort: a swimming pool, hot tub and spa.
Hospitality and tourism
From yoga to knight jousting to live film scores, Denver-area tourist attractions had plenty to offer in 2018. Check out photos showing the breadth of activities available here in the metro, and a peek at what entertainment-seekers can expect this year.
Retail
Since its launch 25 years ago, Amazon's reach has extended well beyond retail. The company, which employs 647,500 people worldwide, has become the dominant cloud services provider through AWS, a streaming service and more. Scroll through the timeline for a look at the company's explosive evolution.
Authenticity and fan loyalty are two reasons why Colorado-based Crocs (Nasdaq: CROX) decided to collaborate with Indiana-based accessory maker Vera Bradley (Nasdaq: VRA) on a shoe collection released Monday. The shoes created through the collaboration cost between $39.99 and $49.99.
Commercial real estate
It’s not immediately clear what impact this major combination of two real estate giants will have on JLL and HFF’s Denver offices. When it comes to total square feet of space in Denver brokered in 2017, JLL ranked No. 3 at 17 million square feet; HFF ranked No. 12 with 1.69 million square feet.
The National Medal of Honor Museum Foundation has named the Mile High City as a finalist to land the future home of the first-of-its-kind museum — a $150 million project that’s estimated to create hundreds of jobs and attract 1 million visitors to town each year. The state has set aside land for the project that it owns at the northeast corner of the intersection of Lincoln Street and East Colfax Avenue. DBJ looks at how stakeholders across the state plan to convince the foundation’s board that Denver is right for the museum.
One of the tallest buildings in a section of Denver’s River North Art District near the 38th and Blake RTD station will be a high-end apartment building that features both affordable units and top-tier penthouses. The developer, which recently completed the Dairy Block in Lower Downtown, bought the site for $6.5 million.
