A supersonic jet company, a biopharmaceutical company targeting diseases with unmet medical needs, and a company working to thwart cyber crime are among the Colorado companies that made the first quarter of 2017 a comeback quarter.

Colorado companies scored big in venture capital investment money with $345 million in 43 deals in the first quarter of 2017, climbing its way to the No. 4 state in the country for the total number of venture capital deals and dollars. That's according to the MoneyTree report from PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP and CB Insights, released late Tuesday MT.

That is the highest ranking for Colorado in recent years. It has in the past been ranked No. 5 in deals and No. 6 in dollars. Last quarter, however, Colorado was No. 7 in deals and No. 13 in the country for dollars.

What is the explanation for the jump? “It’s a new year,” said Rob Ward, audit partner at PwC in Denver.
