$15,028,995,376 = Colorado marijuana sales since legalization

The Colorado Department of Revenue said the state reached a total of over $15 billion in marijuana sales since its legalization.

COLORADO, USA — In August of this year, Colorado reached a total of over $15 billion in marijuana sales since it was legalized, the Colorado Department of Revenue said Wednesday.

The department's Marijuana Sales Reports— which show monthly sales figures for medical and retail marijuana stores by county— demonstrate that Colorado reached $15,028,995,376 in marijuana sales in August since January 2014, which is when marijuana started being legally sold in the state after it was legalized in 2012.

The report shows the sales figures for the 2023 calendar year so far have already exceeded $1 billion in Colorado. $132,447,967 was made in August alone, per the report.

The department also shared results for September's Marijuana Tax and Fee Revenue Report, which shows how much revenue is actually collected monthly by Colorado as shown in the state accounting system— as of last month, Colorado has collected a total of over $2.5 billion, according to the report.

"Tax revenue comes from the state sales tax (2.9%) on marijuana sold in stores, the state retail marijuana sales tax (15%) on retail marijuana sold in stores, and the state retail marijuana excise tax (15%) on wholesale sales/transfers of retail marijuana," the state's department of revenue said in a release. "Fee revenue comes from marijuana license and application fees."
