Colorado student loan attorney explains options for borrowers

"There are so many positive changes that have gotten too little publicity," Karen Cody-Hopkins said. "There are a number of other options and programs available."

COLORADO, USA — The Biden administration already announced a few alternatives to loan forgiveness following the Supreme Court decision that struck down the student loan debt relief program on Friday.

According to the White House, nearly 300,000 people in Colorado would have qualified for the student debt relief. Soon, those people will have to prepare to start paying again.

"The complexity is sad for a program that affects 45 million people," student loan attorney Karen Cody-Hopkins said.

Cody-Hopkins started focusing on student loan cases in 2006 and hasn't stopped.

"I have clients from age 20 to 80. I have clients from $10,000 of student loans to $600,000," she said. "The Department of Education has made more changes in the last nine months than they made in 20 years, so for people to keep up with all of that is really complicated."

The complications were only made worse when the Supreme Court struck down the student loan forgiveness program on Friday. It left millions wondering "now what?"

"There are so many positive changes that have gotten too little publicity," Cody-Hopkins said. "There are a number of other options and programs available."

Cody-Hopkins said new programs Biden announced shortly after the Supreme Court decision will make a big impact for a lot of borrowers.

That includes a new repayment option called the SAVE plan that offers a zero-dollar payment for some borrowers depending on their income and household size.

They also introduced an on-ramp program that will ease borrowers into making payments again.

The on-ramp program gives borrowers a little wiggle room for the first year of repayments. If they miss a couple of months, they won't be referred to a debt collector or be considered delinquent.

"People are going to have to do a little more to educate themselves, but the benefits of doing that will be very large," Cody-Hopkins said.

Interest on student loans will restart in September, and payments will be due again in October.
