Black Maternal Health Week: Disparities, challenges faced by Black birthing individuals

This year April 11-17 is dedicated to raising awareness and inspiring activism around Black maternal health.

DENVER — In this week's episode of "Sitting with Shay J," we are shining a spotlight on Black Maternal Health Week.

The Black Mamas Matter Alliance said the week, April 11-17 in 2024, is dedicated to raising awareness, inspiring activism and strengthening organizing for Black maternal health.

Sitting with Shay J is Ashley Character, owner and midwife of Birthing Characters, LLC. She joined us to discuss the urgent need for equitable healthcare access and advocacy in the Black community.

During our conversation, we explore the significance of Black Maternal Health Week, and talk about the alarming disparities Black individuals face in maternal health outcomes. 

Character shares insight into what she believes are the root causes of these disparities and the pressing challenges within the healthcare system. She also emphasized the importance of empowering Black birthing individuals to advocate for their own health and well-being.
