LEADVILLE, Colo. — A 50-year-old Fort Collins woman was sentenced to 90 days in jail, 45 of which she can serve through electronic home monitoring, in connection with a fatal drug overdose, according to the Fifth Judicial District Attorney's Office.
Shawn Brecka was sentenced Feb. 18 after she pleaded guilty to a felony drug charge last month involving the overdose death of 32-year-old Gregory Ullman in Leadville.
First responders went to Ulmen’s home on April 8, 2019 and found him dead in his bed from a drug overdose.
Toxicology reports later showed morphine, codeine, oxycodone, and alcohol in his blood, consistent with a heroin overdose.
Leadville Police (LPD) found a series of texts between Ulmen and Brecka in the month that he died.
Upon questioning, Brecka admitted to using heroin and selling methamphetamine to others to fund her drug habit, according to prosecutors.
Text messages also revealed that Brecka sold heroin to Ullman just hours before his death, the DA's office said.
In addition to the jail time, Brecka was sentenced to four years probation and 120 hours of public service.
She must also pay nearly $5,000 in court costs and fees.
She faced up to six years in the department of corrections but received a more lenient sentence because she engaged in extensive substance abuse treatment, including an in-patient program, the DA's office said.
