COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Nobody likes getting a red light ticket, but in this case, it helped one Colorado Springs resident reunite with their stolen car.

The citation showed the resident’s vehicle at the intersection of Platte Avenue and Chelton Road the day after it was stolen, according to a blog post from the Colorado Springs Police Department. The resident brought the ticket to municipal court, and an officer was able to pull photos and video of the man driving the stolen vehicle.

The suspect was then identified as James Whitmire, according to Colorado Springs police, who said he was already known to law enforcement. When detectives found Whitmore in the El Paso County Jail, police said he admitted to being behind the wheel in the red light photo.

He has since been arrested for felony motor vehicle theft.
