Man charged in recent Denver kidnappings spent time in prison after 2009 arrest

Adrian Alamillo-Gonzales, who spent time in prison for a 2009 case, failed to appear for a December court hearing related to the two current cases.

DENVER — Denver Police are searching for a man charged with kidnapping and sexual assault in two separate downtown incidents after he failed to appear for a court date in December.

The Denver District Attorney’s Office charged 40-year-old Adrian Alamillo-Gonzales with five felony counts. The charges included second-degree kidnapping, attempted sexual assault and unlawful sexual contact.

But police said there may be more of Alamillo-Gonzales' victims who have not yet come forward.

"It's terrifying to think about there being more victims and it's not surprising," said Megan Carvajal, executive director of the Blue Bench.

Carvajal said the staff at Blue Bench are always busy, working around the clock to help victims of sexual assault.

She said it's scary to think that Alamillo-Gonzales, a man accused of sexually assaulting and kidnapping multiple women in Denver, could have more victims still out there.

"It is, it's terrifying," Carvajal said.

Alamillo-Gonzales is facing felony charges for an incident in the fall of 2022 and another in spring of 2023. Police said both happened in downtown Denver around the time bars were letting out.

In one incident, police said Alamillo-Gonzales forced a woman into his car. The victim fought with him for several blocks before he dropped her off and then took off.

In the second incident, court records say a woman got into a car at the end of the night near Herb's Hideout at 20th Street and Larimer Street, thinking he was her Uber. She realized she'd gotten into the wrong car but he began to drive away.

The affidavit says Alamillo-Gonzales wouldn't stop, telling the woman he had a gun.

He pulled over in an alley. Court records say he crawled on top of her, trying to kiss her, grabbing her and attempting to reach his hand down her pants.

That victim was able to call for help and Alamillo-Gonzales was later arrested.

Now, Denver Police said there could be more of his victims out there.

"It is important to come forward if they feel safe to do so. Reporting is only one way to seek justice and healing in this experience," Carvajal.

Carvajal said for those who may have been victimized by Alamillo-Gonzales and feel able to – report it to police. Blue Bench can help you every step of the way, she said.

But others may not be ready or willing to come forward to police. Carvajal stressed that's OK, too. She said they can still offer confidential help, resources, even therapy to help those victims find a path forward.

"There's not one right way to do this. But it is important when we've experienced something so traumatic to accept the help that is out there for us and to give ourselves the opportunity to be believed that this wasn't our fault. That's how we move forward and that's how we heal," Carvajal said.

For those going out to visit crowded restaurants, late-night bars and nightclubs, Carvajal said it's normal to want to stay vigilant.

She recommended people keep an eye on their surroundings and on what they consume. When you're out with friends, stay with them. If you're taking a rideshare, check the information to ensure it matches before you get in. And if it feels off, know it's OK to get out of that car.

But, Carvajal said, it's important to remember what happened in this case or any other is never the fault of the victim.

If you or someone you know is in need of help, you can call Blue Bench's hotline 24/7. For English, that number is 303-322-7273. For Spanish, the hotline number is 303-329-0031.

A spokesperson for Denver Police confirmed that Alamillo-Gonzales was also arrested in Denver in 2009 on kidnapping and burglary charges. Court records show that he pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery in April 2010 related to that case and was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

He was given credit for 317 days he had already spent behind bars. 9NEWS has reached out to the Department of Corrections for information about when he was released.
