Denver officer threatened to interfere with ex-girlfriend's child custody case, affidavit says

Ramone Young has been with the Denver Police Department for 13 years.

DENVER — A Denver Police officer arrested on domestic violence-related harassment charges suggested he could use his position to impact his ex-girlfriend's custody of her children and make anonymous reports to get her new partner in trouble, according to his arrest affidavit.

The Denver Police Department announced Friday that Ramone Young, who has been with the department since 2013, had been arrested by Aurora Police the day prior. Young had most recently been assigned to the department's patrol division, and DPD said he was moved to a non-patrol assignment after his arrest.

An arrest affidavit obtained by 9NEWS says that before Young was arrested in Aurora, Denver Police had already been investigating him earlier in the year on alleged threats he made to his ex-girlfriend about his "desire to fight" her new partner, but there was not enough evidence to file charges initially.

However, the affidavit says DPD's Internal Affairs unit learned that Young kept contacting his ex-girlfriend and that an "additional incident" occurred on March 8. DPD then issued Young a non-criminal protection order that required him to stop contacting her, per the affidavit.

According to the arrest affidavit, the aforementioned incident took place in Aurora, which is why the Aurora Police Department started its own investigation.

Young's ex-girlfriend told Aurora Police that she and Young had a relationship of approximately three years, which she believed ended after his wife found out about it, the affidavit says. She reportedly did not know Young was married when their relationship started. Young's ex-girlfriend also said she had been trying to stop him from contacting her for a while, claiming she blocked him several times on her phone and on social media, per the affidavit.

The affidavit says on March 8, she noticed one of Young's cars outside her work. Later that night, Young called her while she was driving home from work, and she told him she would go to his house to tell his wife in an attempt to get him to stop contacting her, according to the affidavit.

She then pulled off the roadway after noticing that another car was following her and, per the affidavit, it was Young's. He reportedly got out of his car and insisted she let him inside hers, which she eventually did.

In the car, the affidavit says Young told his ex-girlfriend that "she needed to keep her mouth shut" so they could be together in the future, but she told him she wanted to cut all ties with him. She claimed Young replied with something that suggested "he could somehow negatively affect the [Child Protective Services] investigation to ensure she did not get her kids back," per the affidavit. She also said Young "claimed he would start making anonymous reports about [her new partner] to get him into trouble as well," according to the affidavit.

When Young's ex-girlfriend told him she wanted him to "leave her alone," he then got out of the car, walked over to the driver's side, opened the door and "pulled her out of the car," per the affidavit. The affidavit says he "forcefully hugged her" and tried to kiss her despite her telling him she did not want him to. He reportedly left after that.

Young was arrested on suspicion of two counts of domestic violence-related harassment, according to Denver Police.

He made his first court appearance Friday and is due back in court next week.
