DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. — A Douglas County Sheriff's Office deputy made a startling discovery during a traffic stop on Leap Day.
The deputy initiated the traffic stop near Chatfield State Park after seeing a camper being towed that didn't have plates. The truck towing the camper also had an expired temporary tag, according to the sheriff's office.
The deputy became suspicious that something else was afoot after speaking with the truck's driver.
During a search of the truck, the deputy found a handgun, multiple packages of suspected drugs and drug paraphernalia. The deputy, according to the sheriff's office, also found a grenade during their search and had to call out the bomb squad to render the device safe.
The grenade was found to not be live and contained BBs; however, deputies had to treat it as if the device were live, the sheriff's office said.
The man who was driving the truck was arrested on suspicion of possession of a weapon and drug possession, to go along with other possible charges. A woman passenger was also arrested on suspicion of drug possession.
