Suspect ID'd in double shooting at New Year's Eve party

One person was killed and another injured in the shooting near West Harvard Avenue and South Sheridan Boulevard in the Harvey Park neighborhood.

DENVER — Police on Friday said they had arrested a new suspect in the fatal shooting of one person and injuring of another in the early morning hours of New Year's Day.

The shooting happened about 1:30 a.m. in the 2500 block of South Zenobia Street in Denver. That is near West Harvard Avenue and South Sheridan Boulevard in the Harvey Park neighborhood, according to Denver Police.

When officers arrived on scene, they found a large crowd of people in a front yard yelling and arguing with one another. Officers dispersed the crowd and found one victim who had been shot in the head. That victim, identified as 42-year-old Mario Rivera, was taken to a hospital and pronounced deceased, according to the arrest affidavit.

A second victim was found with multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to a hospital and where he was in critical condition, the affidavit says.

Denver Police initially arrested Anthony Lopez, 42, in the shootings. On Friday, police said they determined that Lopez's son, Isaiah Hernandez, 19, was the one who fired the shots.

Hernandez was arrested Jan. 3 and is being held on suspicion of first-degree murder. Lopez faces charges related to the homicide, police said.

According to the affidavit, Lopez and Hernandez attended a New Year's Eve party at a residence when one of them got into an altercation. Lopez and Hernandez were asked to leave. A witness told police that the altercation continued in the front yard, which was when the shooting happened.
