Gang member sentenced to 30 years in prison after shell casings tied to 2 murders

The US Attorney credits advanced ballistic technology with matching shell casings found at both murder scenes.

DENVER — A national database that catalogs bullet shell casings was used to connect a Denver gang member to two murders, US Attorney Jason Dunn announced in a release Monday.

A district court judge sentenced 28-year-old David Scott to 30 years in federal prison for using firearms during crimes of violence, specifically two murders — one on Nov. 23, 2014 at the Beach Nightclub and another the next day, on Nov. 24, 2014, the US Attorney said.

Scott, a member of the Park Hill Crenshaw Mafia Gangster (CMG) Bloods gang, went to the Beach Nightclub on Nov. 23, 2014 to "initiate a conflict" with rival Crip gang members, according to the US Attorney.

When Crip gang members left the nightclub, the US Attorney said Scott shot another gang member, killing him, and causing a shootout between members of the Crip and CMG Bloods gangs. Law enforcement later recovered 30 shell casings from the Beach Nightclub parking lot.

The next day, in the early morning hours of Nov. 24, 2014, Scott drove around metro Denver with a Crip gang member committing two street robberies and traveling to a motel, the US Attorney said.

The US Attorney said Scott then drove the man to another location to be dropped off, followed him out of the vehicle, retrieved a firearm from his waistband and shot the man, killing him.

Law enforcement also recovered two shell casings from the area around the man's body — and then determined those shell casings matched those used to kill the man in front of the nightclub the day before.

"The defendant deserves every day he will serve in prison because of his callous disregard for human life combined with his life as a member of a violent criminal street gang," Dunn said.
