GOLDEN, Colo. — A man accused of shooting a service dog during a robbery at a Wheat Ridge motel has been sentenced to 25 years in prison, according to the First Judicial District Attorney's Office.

While trying to get pills and money from two women in a motel room, Wheat Ridge police said Jemelle Charles Adams and Jasmine Nicole Martinez barged into their room at the American Motel just before midnight in November 2017. The motel is near Interstate 70 and Kipling Street.

Adams had a gun out when he broke through the door, followed by Martinez who came in also brandishing a gun, the District Attorney said. Both women were assaulted and after one of the women was struck, her two dogs attacked Adams.

He shot one of the dogs, the DA said, in the shoulder. He faced an additional charge of animal cruelty for shooting the 10-year-old dog, Nalla. Nalla's leg had to be amputated due to the injury she sustained that night.

After the scuffle, the pair fled the motel with things they took from the room, police said. Adams and Martinez were taken into custody the following month.

Adams pleaded guilty to two aggravated robbery charges.

Martinez was sentenced last November to 10 years in prison. She pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery.
