Woman arrested, accused of stabbing Boulder officer in shoulder

After stabbing the officer, the woman sat down and refused to drop her knife for roughly 45 minutes, an arrest affidavit says.

BOULDER, Colo. — A woman who had been asked "multiple times" to leave a Boulder store stabbed an officer who responded there for a trespassing call late Wednesday, according to an arrest affidavit.

Employees at Lucky's Market at 3960 Broadway called the police around 8 p.m. Wednesday after the woman, later identified as Patricia Murphy, refused to leave.

When two Boulder Police officers arrived, they observed Murphy being verbally aggressive. After an officer told her she needed to leave, Murphy grabbed a knife from her back pocket and stabbed the officer in his upper left shoulder, the affidavit says.

The officer is expected to be OK, Boulder Police said.

After stabbing the officer, Murphy lunged toward the other responding officer with the knife. She hit that officer's radio with the knife and the officer was not hurt, according to the affidavit.

One officer then grabbed Murphy from behind, but she lunged again toward the other officer. Both of the officers then retreated while continuing to give Murphy commands, the affidavit says.

Murphy walked to a cart and sat down next to it. Additional officers arrived and pointed lethal and less lethal weapons at her while giving her commands, according to the document. She continued to sit with the knife in her hand.

Officers talked with her for about 45 minutes. During that time, she refused to put down the knife. She eventually put it into her pocket but still refused to comply with other commands, the affidavit says.

Officers warned her she was under arrest and said they would use force if she did not comply. The affidavit says that Murphy replied that she was not going to comply and "did not care" if force was used against her.

Eventually, officers used "less lethal" foam rounds on Murphy. After several shots to her arms and legs, Murphy complied with commands and laid down on the floor with her arms out.

She was taken to a hospital and booked into the Boulder County jail after being medically cleared. Murphy faces the following charges:

  • First-degree assault on a peace officer
  • Trespassing
  • Obstructing a peace officer
  • Resisting arrest
  • Menacing
