39-year-old man arrested after attempted armed robbery at southeastern Indiana casino

The incident happened around 8 p.m. Saturday at the Hollywood Casino and Hotel in Lawrenceburg.

LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. — A man in southern Indiana is in custody after he tried to rob a casino Saturday night.

According to NBC affiliate WLWT, police responded to a report of a person with a gun at the Hollywood Casino and Hotel in Lawrenceburg.

Investigators have not released details about what happened inside the casino but did say the 39-year-old suspect ran from the scene. He was later found and arrested at a nearby nature preserve, a spokesperson with the Dearborn County Sheriff's Office told WLWT.

(NOTE: 13News does not name suspects until charges have been filed by prosecutors.)

The suspect was arrested on a preliminary charge of robbery while armed with a deadly weapon.

WLWT spoke to Rhonda Sanderson, who was inside the casino and said she was near the suspect when the incident began.

"The security guard came over and was like, 'look behind you.' And we looked, and we were right by the stage and where the cages are, where they do the transitioning of the money. We could see a commotion. It was just straight fear." Sanderson told WLWT.

The Indiana Gaming Commission is investigating the incident and told WLWT they are thankful law enforcement was able to protect visitors and staff members and the Hollywood Casino and Hotel is still open and operating.

Lawrenceburg is roughly 100 miles southeast of downtown Indianapolis.
