Man writes fraudulent $92,000 check, drives away from dealership in a new truck, sheriff's office says

The sheriff recovered the dealership's truck, but they're still looking for Brad Bauer, who is suspected of driving off after writing a fraudulent $92,000 check.

WELD COUNTY, Colo. — A man walked into a Boulder car dealership, picked out a shiny, new GMC pickup truck, wrote a $92,000 check and drove off in his new wheels. One problem, though – his check bounced.

The Mike Maroone GMC dealership in Boulder called the Weld County Sheriff's Office to report the stolen truck on Jan. 3 after they found out the man didn't have the funds to cover the check he wrote.

Deputies are looking for Brad Bauer, who they suspect of visiting the truck dealership on Dec. 9, 2023, and writing the fraudulent $92,000 check.

The stolen truck was tracked down by OnStar, a GPS installed on the truck, and deputies located it in the Pike National Forest parked on a snowed-in forest road.

Weld County Sheriff's deputies found the truck but have yet to find their suspect. Bauer has an active arrest warrant for this case on suspicion of motor vehicle theft and check fraud.

Here's a picture of the GMC truck that was located by deputies parked on a secluded forest road.
