19-year-old charged in fatal New Year's Day shooting in Commerce City

Friends and family remembered the victim of the shooting in a vigil held Thursday evening.

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — A 19-year-old man was charged with first-degree murder in connection to a fatal shooting New Year's Day, the 17th Judicial District Attorney's Office said in a release Thursday.

The shooting took place Monday morning near East 78th Avenue and Dahlia Street in Commerce City. The DA's office said the shooting — which took place inside a vehicle — killed a man, according to the DA's office.

Police said 19-year-old Angel Lozano turned himself in Monday evening and was booked into the Adams County jail. Commerce City Police previously identified him as a person of interest. On Thursday, the DA's office announced the official filing of one count of first-degree murder against Lozano.

A vigil was held Thursday evening to remember the victim of the shooting, who was identified by family as Joseph Ramirez. Ramirez's mom said he leaves behind a wife and two kids, a 2-year-old and a 5-year-old, as well as a big extended family.

Ramirez's loved ones said he always made sure to take care of everyone he could.

Police believe Lozano and Ramirez knew each other.

Lozano is due in court Friday, Jan. 5.
