Tips lead to arrest of suspect in man's killing on pedestrian bridge

Luis Nieves, 31, was found injured in the pedestrian over Interstate 25 near Colorado Boulevard. He later died from his injuries.

DENVER — Tips submitted through Metro Denver Crime Stoppers helped investigators track down and arrest a suspect in connection with the killing of a man who was found dead on a pedestrian bridge over Interstate 25, according to an update from the Denver Police Department (DPD).

Christopher Butler, 29, was arrested Tuesday and is being held for investigation of first-degree murder and possession of a weapon by a previous offender.

He's accused of killing 31-year-old Luis Nieves, who was shot on the pedestrian bridge over Interstate 25 near Colorado Boulevard just before 9 p.m. on Jan. 9.

In addition to a Crime Stoppers reward, Nieves family members provided additional money, bringing the reward for information in the case to $4,000.

Officers were initially called to the area in regard to a person who was possibly hurt. They arrived on the scene to find Nieves injured. He was transported to the hospital and later died, the Denver Police Department (DPD) said.

Prior to the arrest of Butler, DPD said the suspect may be associated with a rust or burnt-orange-colored, newer model Ford Edge SUV. They also released a grainy photo from a security camera of a person they called a person of interest.

Documents related to Butler's arrest are sealed at this time.
